PGA Assistant / PGA Trainee

Shop / Club Roles / Responsibilities

Motivated individual who wants to pursue a career within the Golf Industry or who is already actively involved in the golf industry.
Team Player – To work alongside the Head PGA Professional Ben Derbyshire and 2 other PGA staff members on a daily basis. Plus to assist any of the clubs office staff/members.
Flexible – Flexibility in terms of structuring weekly hours and rosters.
Reliable, Trustworthy & Punctual.
Out-Going and approachable personality – To be very approachable within the Pro Shop, friendly can do attitude to members and willing to go that extra mile to make sure all receive the very best customer service.
Organised – The ability to organise their daily work and plan both from an administrative and coaching element.
Take Initiative – Willingness to make your own decisions and take the initiative on things that come your way when working in the Pro Shop.
Ability to sell/knowledge of products – To help both members and guests when purchasing goods and services from the Pro Shop with reliable information and knowledge.
Computer Literate – Able to understand the clubs current Tee Sheet booking system (BRS Golf), in booking in both members and guests rounds of golf. (Full Training on BRS will be given). Also experience in both Microsoft Word & Excel an advantage.
Assist in the running of the Pro Shop and golf operation. Manage Member, Guest, Visitor & Society bookings and help the smooth running of Club competitions. Deal with busy phone line with information given to Members & Visitors.
Assist with the retail operation in terms of stock control, merchandising and sales.
Pro Active / Forward Thinking – Willing to be proactive and share ideas in order for the business to progress. Team meet regularly to shares ideas and discuss any issues.

Coaching Role & Opportunities

Junior Coaching – To work with our growing Junior section and conduct 2-3 sessions per week. Huge scope to build your own Junior Academy and expand the numbers of Juniors taking lessons at the club.
Tri-Golf in Schools – To be willing to conduct Tri-Golf based sessions in local schools outside of any Pro Shop hours, help with promoting the club externally and building our junior academy. Currently we work with 12+ Primary Schools and have therefore this work will be passed on to a new PGA Professional to build their diary.
Opportunity to coach Members & Guests and build your own portfolio of clients. Club benefits from a 240 yard Practice Ground, Short Game Area, Putting Green and fantastic Golf Course recently ranked 5th Best in Cheshire. Currently 700 Members at Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club.
Utilise Indoor Swing Studio – Conduct private lessons & Custom Fitting sessions to both Members & Guests within the Swing Studio. The facility recently had an upgrade in May 2026 and is kitted out with the latest Foresight GC Quad & FSX Software and Fitting equipment from Ping/TM/Callaway for the Professional to utilise at their discretion.
Playing – To play as much as possible with the Members at VRA, to help build rapport with your clients and the Pro Shop team. Opportunity to join in on certain club competitions and take part in our Annual Pro Shop Golf Day.

Head Professional happy to support anyone looking to start their PGA Training &  Qualification.

Hours / Breakdown

Approx. 25 Hours per week working within the Pro Shop

Winter Period – Approx. 18 Hours per week within the Pro Shop

Summer Period – Approx. 20-25 Hours per week within the Pro Shop

Pro Shop work and hours generally conducted over 4 days, with 2 Full Days & 2 Half Days, days can change from week to week depending on the Head Pro’s schedule so flexibility is needed. Flexibility then to Coach outside of Pro Shop shifts or other days,

All other work conducted (Private Lessons, Junior Lessons, Tri-Golf, Groups Clinics, Beginner classes, Private Tuition & Custom Fitting sessions) will take place outside of the hours allocated to the Pro Shop. Private coaching work will be conducted on a Self Employed basis.
Great earning potential from Coaching element of the role with security of Pro Shop hours.
