The History of Formby Hall

The Formby family has been associated with this site since the 12th century, though the date of the original hall is unknown. The main Formby Hall residence, standing now was built in 1523 for William Formby, and over the centuries it was expanded and modernised. The Formby family line ended in 1958 with the death of Colonel John Frederick Lonsdale Formby, after both of his sons were killed in World War II. The estate passed to a distant relative, and much of the land was sold for property development. The hall itself fell into disrepair until the early 1990’s when it was purchased and fully restored.

Part of the land was sold and converted into the golf course that is here today. The hotel and resort built from those beginnings, and this year we are excited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the course!

The original hall is now a luxury, private residence and can be seen from the 16th hole as a striking reminder of the history of our location.
